Milejczyce – where the Good Shepherd still seeks his sheep

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
Jn 10:11

Some places are hard to put into words.

Not because they are grand.

Quite the opposite.

Because their strength lies hidden in simplicity.

That is exactly how it was during our one-day pilgrimage to Milejczyce, a small village in the Podlasie region, home to the Sanctuary of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus the Good Shepherd.

We travelled to Milejczyce together – my husband, my parents-in-law and I. Above all we wanted to give thanks, to entrust to God all the intentions sent to us in the Prayer on the Sycamore, and simply to spend a while with the One who never stops searching for his sheep.

And the moment we crossed the threshold of the church, we understood why so many pilgrims return here every year.

A tiny church, an enormous heart

The first surprise?

This is not a vast basilica.

It is not a place full of splendour.

It is a small wooden church that has kept a remarkably family-like atmosphere. You get the impression that everyone who comes here is simply an expected guest.

Even though pilgrims arrive from all over Poland, the way this place is organised makes a great impression.

You can see the kindness.

The calm.

The warmth.

There is no rush and no chaos.

Instead there are volunteers, priests and people who genuinely want to help another human being.

Among the pilgrims we met people in wheelchairs, on crutches and with walking sticks, families with children and the elderly. Each of them came here with their own story, suffering, hope or gratitude.

After the Mass celebrated at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday (the Mass for pilgrims), the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered, which is why for many people this is an exceptional day, full of prayer, entrustment and perhaps a last hope.

An image that speaks without words

The greatest treasure of the sanctuary is, of course, the miraculous image of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus the Good Shepherd.

This is no ordinary depiction.

The longer you look at it, the more details you begin to notice.

Christ is shown as the Good Shepherd, holding a sheep on his shoulders with extraordinary tenderness.

Yet it is the details that make the image move the heart.

What amazed us most is that the little sheep has a human eye.

That is no accident.

It is, after all, each one of us.

Every person who is lost, weary, wounded – or found by God.

The sheep’s ears are turned as though it were constantly listening for the voice of its Shepherd.

Even more eloquent is the face of Jesus.

One ear leans gently towards the sheep, as if Christ wanted to hear even the faintest whisper of his child.

The other remains open to the world.

To further cries.

To more hearts.

To everyone who is only just looking for the way to God.

That is what love looks like.

Love that passes no one by.

A smile and suffering at once

Looking longer at the face of Jesus, you can notice one more remarkable detail.

One corner of the mouth seems slightly raised.

The other remains sorrowful.

It is extraordinary symbolism.

Christ rejoices over every person who is found.

But at the same time he suffers because of those who walk away.

His Heart never stops loving.

Never.

The red that speaks of a King

Equally eloquent is the robe of Christ.

Art historians point out that the red used here was once among the most costly of pigments.

It was not a random colour.

It symbolised royal dignity, authority and great worth.

Here it reminds us that the Good Shepherd is not merely the guardian of his sheep.

He is also the King, who reigns not through force, but through love.

A sanctuary by the River Bug

The church in Milejczyce has been drawing pilgrims from all over Poland for years. Devotion to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus the Good Shepherd has been growing here for decades, and the place has been raised to the rank of a Diocesan Sanctuary, becoming one of the more important pilgrimage sites of the Drohiczyn diocese.

Every year thousands of people come here to ask for health, peace of heart, the healing of relationships, the conversion of those they love and the strength to carry their daily cross.

And that is hardly surprising.

After just a few minutes of prayer you can feel an extraordinary peace.

The greatest miracle happens every day

As we were leaving Milejczyce, however, I thought about something very important.

It is so easy to be enchanted by sanctuaries.

So easy to go looking for extraordinary places.

And yet the very same Jesus waits for us every day in our own parishes.

It is at every Holy Mass that the greatest miracle in the world takes place.

At the moment of Holy Communion, Christ himself comes to dwell in our hearts.

That is when healings happen.

That is when conversions come.

That is when a person regains the peace that the world cannot give.

So it is worth going on pilgrimage.

It is worth visiting holy places.

It is worth drawing on their history and their testimonies.

But it is worth even more not to forget that Jesus is here, that he lives, here and now — waiting for you in the nearest church, at every Eucharist. Alive, truly alive.

Because the Good Shepherd does not wait in Milejczyce alone.

He waits for you every day.

Trust him. Come.

🤠 Dzika Figa

If you ever find yourself near Podlasie, do visit the Sanctuary of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus the Good Shepherd in Milejczyce.

It is a place you travel to out of curiosity and come back from with peace.

And if you cannot get there, remember — Christ is closer than we sometimes think. He waits for us at every Eucharist, ready to carry us on his shoulders as the Good Shepherd carries his sheep. 🤠
