Beneath the Gothic vaulting we gave 2025 to God – Barcelona, a witness to Europe’s faith
We began 2025 in the heart of Christian Barcelona
We began the New Year of 2025 in Barcelona.
Not with fireworks. Not with resolutions.
Beneath the Gothic vaulting of the cathedral at Plaça Nova we gave the coming year to God.
In a city of light, of Gaudí’s architecture and of European contrasts, we wanted to begin with silence.
With prayer.
With a foundation.
Barcelona – does it remember its faith?
For centuries Barcelona was unambiguously Catholic.
A Christian community existed here as early as the fourth century. The city’s patroness became St Eulalia – a young martyr who gave her life for Christ.
Today Catalonia is among the most secularised regions of Spain. Faith is no longer an obvious part of its identity. And yet the churches are open. Masses are celebrated. Candles burn.
The history of Barcelona is a history of faith, of persecution, of civil war and of Europe’s spiritual crisis.
And in spite of it all, the cathedrals still stand.

The Cathedral of St Eulalia – the heart of faith at Plaça Nova
The Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia rises in the very centre of historic Barcelona.
Gothic vaults, stained glass, stone columns – everything draws the eye upwards.
In the cloisters live 13 white geese – a symbol of the 13 years of St Eulalia’s life.
Her relics rest in the crypt.
The font is a reminder of the beginning.
The confessionals – of return.
The Cross – of the centre of everything.
It was here that we began 2025.
„If these were silent, the stones would cry out” (Lk 19:37–40)
As Jesus was entering Jerusalem, the crowd praised him with a loud voice. The Pharisees tried to silence the disciples.
He answered:
„I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would cry out.”
(Lk 19:40)
In Barcelona these words take on a particular meaning.
If Europe falls silent, the stone still proclaims the Gospel.
Gothic walls, cathedrals, basilicas – they remember.
Perhaps that is why the stone of Barcelona still speaks of Christ.
Sagrada Família – Gaudí and catechesis in stone
We did not manage to get inside the Sagrada Família, but we stood before it for a long time.
Antoni Gaudí was not designing decoration.
He was designing a profession of faith.
The Passion façade is austere and dramatic.
The Nativity façade – full of life.
This is not a tourist attraction.
It is catechesis carved in stone.
Gaudí died a poor man, but he left behind a work that reminds millions of people of the Gospel.
Saint Eulalia, Patroness of Barcelona
The most important saint associated with Barcelona is St Eulalia – a young martyr of the fourth century.
-
She died around the year 303, during the persecution of Christians under the emperor Diocletian.
-
According to tradition she was only 13 years old.
-
She refused to renounce Christ.
-
She was subjected to brutal torture and finally suffered a martyr’s death.
She is the patroness of Barcelona.
Her relics are kept in the crypt of the Cathedral of St Eulalia (Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia), the very cathedral at Plaça Nova.
A symbolic detail:
In the cathedral cloisters live 13 white geese – a symbol of the saint’s 13 years of life and of her purity.
The spirit of Barcelona – between history and the present day
Barcelona delights with its modernity, its design, its architecture and its energy.
But beneath that layer of a pulsing metropolis lies a city that carries within it the memory of Christianity.
Is Barcelona a city of faith today?
Not in the sense it once was.
But faith has not disappeared.
It is in the silence of the chapels.
In the liturgy.
In the candles lit by tourists who, for a moment, stop being tourists.

That is how we began 2025
Not with plans.
Not with lists.
Beneath the Gothic vaulting we gave this year to God.
In a city that was once unambiguously Catholic.
In a Europe that today needs to remember its roots.
Barcelona became for us a reminder that faith is not an addition to life.
It is the foundation.
